That Director/ Artist Relationship! (((Part 1)))

I was gonna write a post about how much I love the editor of American Idol, but I don't have to write a whole post. But, you get the point! I love the editing on American Idol, so Oren Castro, Tim Perniaciaro, Jayson Belt and all you amazing editors I LOVE YOU!

ANYWAY! Today I want to talk about that Director/Artist relationship that can is integral to both parties' development and perfection of their art. Whether it be a musician or an actor, this relationship is such a beautiful thing and let's look at which collaborations do it best.

TONY SCOTT AND DENZEL WASHINGTON

This is one of my favourite Director/Actor relationships. Their relationship has created some of the most intense cinematic experiences of all time. Why does their relationship work so well? I believe it is because Scott understands that Washington is an emotionally intelligent, spiritual man who wants to create work that reflects that and allows him to do so with freedom and in the most slick and professional way around. ScottFree Pictures' body of work is resounding and echoes around the world because these two give their relationship the space it needs to breathe. As my Nigerian friends would say; it's not by force.

  • Unstoppable
  • The Taking of Pelham 123
  • Deja Vu
  • Man On Fire
  • Crimson Tide
Oh SWOON! They inspire me. Watching these two work you can imagine what was lacking from other relationships that made other films not as good. Watch the trailer from my favourite film ever Man On Fire and then watch the film when you get a chance to experience what a great director/actor relationship feels like. My Creasy Bear.

MARTIN SCORSESE AND LEONARDO DICAPRIO

As opposed to Scott and Washington who, it can be argued make similar films over and over, these two create new and exciting worlds, with Dicaprio always playing new and exciting roles, where I can understand Washington can be said (not by me) to be playing the same role; "I'm in charge of something and someone is taking my power away, let me spend the 2nd and 3rd acts trying to regain my authority." Actually, now that I've said that Dicaprio actually plays the same role over and over again "I have some power, I want more power. Oh no, no one will give it to me. Oh no, I'm dead." Yes, think about it, he does that in The Departed, Gangs of New York, Romeo and Juliet, Shutter Island. Ha! I win.

These two are amazing. Check out their repertoire.

  • Shutter Island
  • The Departed
  • The Aviator
  • Gangs of New York
Have a look at my favourite Scorsese film's trailer; The Departed.

OK, I have to run to work. In part two, we'll have a look at music video directors and musicians. Yummy!

Enjoy!
